About Us


With interactive workshops led by dynamic leaders in higher education from a range of backgrounds, the Women of Color Conference was created by the New York American Council on Education (ACE) Women's Network and designed to educate, uplift, and inspire you to uncover the best version of yourself! On January 11, 2019, we will touch on diversity issues and how they affect both higher education professionals and students alike.  This movement will also highlight the accomplishments of women of color in higher education, encourage the creation of innovative ideas, and cultivate lasting relationships and connections. By the end of the day, we expect our guests to leave with a sense of empowerment, ready to discover the greatness within themselves.

In addition to the New York ACE Network being the premier New York State organization empowering women leaders in higher education, we are the only major higher education association to represent all types of U.S. accredited degree granting institutions: 2 and 4 year, public and private. We convene representatives from all sectors to collectively tackle the toughest higher education challenges, with a focus on improving access and preparing every student to succeed.

Denise Patrick

Principal and Founder, Denise Patrick Consulting

Faculty of Learning and Development, Leadership, Organizational Communication and Development at Baruch College

Denise Patrick is an accomplished leadership and communication thought leader who strives to teach, lead and inspire people to enhance their leadership communication, creativity, critical thinking and collaboration skills.

For more than 25 years, Ms. Patrick has skillfully facilitated strategic planning sessions, staff retreats and leadership and communication workshops for private businesses, non-profit organizations, and city agencies. As a trainer and facilitator, Ms. Patrick has enjoyed the various opportunities she has had to mentor and coach individuals to the next levels in their careers.

In addition to Ms. Patrick’s experience in workshop design and delivery, she is knowledgeable in building partnerships, creating strategic alliances, strategic planning.

An award-winning Lecturer at The City University of New York-Baruch College, Ms. Patrick teaches courses in communication and leadership for undergraduates and students in Baruch’s Executive MBA and Executive MPA, and National Urban Fellows programs. Prior to joining the faculty at Baruch, she was an instructor at Temple University, and the Wharton School of Business, University of Pennsylvania.

Ms. Patrick holds a B.A. in Corporate Communication from the City University of New York, Baruch College and a M.A. in Rhetoric & Communication from Temple University.

Usheevii King

Associate Director of Faculty Development and Diversity

NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Development

Usheevii King is Associate Director for Faculty Development and Diversity at NYU Steinhardt where she works on professional development opportunities and resources for faculty in areas such as diversity, inclusion, and equity; teaching and technology; disseminating faculty research and artistic work to broader audiences, and other areas that promote faculty success. Further, she also works with departments and faculty to build more effective mentoring and networking opportunities for junior and underrepresented faculty. Prior to joining NYU Steinhardt, Usheevii served as Deputy Diversity Officer at her alma mater, New York Law School. There, she assisted the law school in developing and implementing its first Institutional Diversity Plan while managing all aspects of faculty governance and the adjunct professor hiring process.



Dr. Angela Joseph

Director of financial Aid 

CUNY School of LAW

Dr. Joseph has over 26 years of experience providing financial literacy tools to students in a variety of ways. She is the only Belizean Grounded Theorist in the world and is currently Director of Financial Aid at CUNY School of Law and an Assistant Professor at Guttman Community College, CUNY.  Dr. Joseph has received numerous awards, including the Touro College Graduate School of Business Entrepreneurship Center Woman of Valor Award, and CUNY Black Law Students Association award for Exceptional Leadership. Dr. Joseph is the author of six middle-grade books. She holds a B.A. in sociology, and M.A. in urban affairs, and a Doctorate of Educational Leadership for Change degree with a concentration in grounded theory/grounded action research.

Heather Parlier

Associate Provost for Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action

Columbia University

Heather Parlier is Columbia University’s Associate Provost for Equal Opportunity and Affirmative Action. In this role, she is responsible for the management of the University’s employee policies and procedures on discrimination, harassment, and sexual assault and misconduct. She also serves as Columbia’s compliance officer for nondiscrimination and affirmative action laws, and for disability access.Ms. Parlier joined Columbia in 2016 from the University of North Carolina Asheville, where she served concurrently as General Counsel and as Chief of Staff. In these positions, she was the chief legal officer for the institution; oversaw the work of the Office of the Chancellor; and was the lead staff member for the campus’ strategic planning process. Prior to becoming an attorney, Ms. Parlier worked in a variety of roles in the Office of University Development at UNC Chapel Hill. Ms. Parlier has a Bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill and a J.D. from the CUNY School of Law.



Kenya Lee

Chief of Staff, office of the president

Baruch College 

Kenya Nyota Lee has served the Office of the President at Baruch College since 2004 and has more than seventeen years of experience in higher education administration.  Ms. Lee currently holds the position of Chief of Staff.  She plays an integral role in the implementation of the college strategic plan and oversees various college-wide strategic initiatives and projects.  In her multiple capacities she actively promotes a campus culture of appreciation, leadership development, and diversity, equity and inclusion; and is co-founder of the Baruch Women’s Leadership Initiative. Ms. Lee’s professional interests include diversity, equity and inclusion in higher education; leadership development; organizational development and strategic planning. Ms. Lee's professional experience also includes the magazine publishing and banking industries. She holds a BA in English from Queens College/CUNY and an MSED in Higher Education Administration from Baruch College. Ms. Lee is the Regional Coordinator of the newly created New York City Region for the ACE New York State Women’s Network.

Maria Rivera

Associate Director of Management and Technology Graduate Program

NYU, School of Professional Studies 

Maria Rivera has over ten years of Management, Sales and Technology Training, Project Management, Web Development, Video Production, and Training & Development (asynchronous and synchronous) experience in Fortune 500 companies, educational institutions, and professional service organizations.  She led strategic initiatives at The Steven L. Newman Real Estate Institute - Baruch College as the Associate Director and also at CUNY School of Professional Studies/ACS Project as a Deputy Director.    She is currently at NYU the School of Professional studies as the Associate Director of the Management and Systems Graduate Degree Program and the Project Management Graduate Degree Program, as well as, the Management and Technology Noncredit Portfolio.   She is doing development in Virtual Reality and spoke at the Trenton Computer Festival earlier this year about Virtual Reality training strategies.   She is a member of the Association for Talent Development and the National Speaker Association.  She believes in the “Everyone wants to be Magnificent" philosophy and has enjoyed training hundreds of adult learners successfully over the years.  Giving back to the community is something that she always makes time to do. She participates in HISPA.org’s Role Model Program.   She has also spoken at AT&T’s HACEMOS Leadership conference, HISPA’s Youth Conferences, Trenton Computer Festivals, and Learning conference.   

She received her BA from Lehman College and her MA in Adult Education & Training from the University of Phoenix.

Carol Hernandez

Instructional Designer

Long Island University 

Carol Hernandez is an instructional designer in the Teaching and Learning Center at Long Island University. She has a decade of experience in postsecondary teaching and in designing measurable learning activities in a variety of platforms (face-to-face, fully online, and hybrid). Currently, she works with faculty across LIU’s three main campuses in Brooklyn, Long Island and Hudson County to support excellent teaching. In Carol’s first career she was an award-winning writer and editor at various newspapers throughout the country, most recently Newsday. She taught journalism at Stony Brook University as an adjunct where she earned her Master’s in higher education administration. She is currently working on her Doctor of Education degree at Northeastern University. Her focus is organizational leadership and her research will look at intersectionality theory in the practice of faculty development. She earned her undergraduate degree in journalism from the University of Florida. She is bilingual and grew up in Miami, but enjoys the beautiful seasons of the Northeast. For fun, she likes to run and do yoga.



Karen Fife

Director

Metro New York and Southern Connecticut Higher Education and Recruitment (HERC) Consortium

Karen Fife is the Director of the Metro New York and Southern Connecticut Higher Education Recruitment Consortium, which is one of 19 regional affiliates of the national Higher Education Recruitment Consortium (HERC).  The HERC’s mission is to assist colleges, universities, research institutions, teaching hospitals and other non-profits in their outreach, recruitment and retention of diverse faculty, staff and administrators and also supports dual career couples in their career searches. Karen works at Columbia University’s EOAA office, which is the lead institution for the MNYSC HERC. She works extensively with her 33 member institutions in the NY area, posting open positions to the HERC national job board and expanding outreach to diverse jobseekers in the NY area. Prior to joining MNYSC HERC at Columbia University 2 years ago, Karen worked in Human Resources at a number of financial services companies. She has an extensive background in strategic staffing, compensation and budget planning, and performance and talent management.


Andrea L. Granville, MBA

DIRECTOR OF HUMAN RESOURCES AND TITLE IX COORDINATOR

LIM COLLEGE

Andrea L. Granville is the Director of Human Resources & Title IX Coordinator at LIM College, where she provides leadership in designing and executing policies and programs that foster an inclusive environment. Prior or working at LIM College, Andrea worked at Macy’s Herald Square, where she was a Manager of Talent Development and a founding member of Macy’s Diversity Council.

As an HR professional, Andrea is an active and engaged member of the Society for Human Resources Management (SHRM). As a member of SHRM, Andrea is an active SHRM A-Team member which offers her the opportunity to lobby on Capitol Hill with her HR peers, engaging in healthy and meaningful dialogue with House and Senate representatives. Andrea is also an active member of New York City Society for Human Resources Management (NYC SHRM), where she is a Board member and Chair of the organizations cornerstone, Speaker Select Series. Andrea is also an Advisory Board Member for Metro New York & Southern Connecticut higher Education Recruitment Consortium (MNYSC HERC).

In November 2017, Andrea became a Certified Image Consultant, through the Studio for Image Professionals. With the certification, Andrea plans to work with women and young adults to provide confidence building and self-awareness.

She holds a BA in Organizational Behavior & Communication from New York University (NYU), in addition to an MBA in General Management from Metropolitan College of New York (MCNY).

Shanee Porter 

Faculty Recruitment Manager

NYU Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Development 

Shanee Porter is the Faculty Recruitment Manager for NYU Steinhardt. In this role, she manages the faculty recruitment process from assisting with the development of the hiring plan to onboarding new hires, including search committee orientations and 360 feedback. In addition, her role is currently being expanded to support more of the faculty life cycle including joint appointments, tenure and promotions, and faculty off-boarding. Prior to joining NYU Steinhardt in 2016, Shanee worked at two major teaching hospitals in NYC. In those positions, she directly supported the Department Chairs administratively and operationally. Shanee has a bachelor’s degree from Fordham University, and anticipates acceptance to an MBA program for Fall 2018. She practices self-reflection, considers herself a strategist, and strives for continuous personal and professional growth and development.
